Grandma's Secrets For Health & Happiness
Welcome to our Blog !

So that you would understand my interest in creating a blog that is primarily to to share

alternative health ideas, I have decided to tell you about my own experience of going from a near

fatal illness at 39, to vibrant physical, mental and spiritual health at 77.

I read recently that it is easier for a people to change their religion or politics than to change

their eating habits. I have witnessed this with many of my friends, and it was true of my life until

after a surgery, I became seriously ill with life-threatening staph infection that the antibiotics

wouldn't touch.

For 2 weeks, I could not eat and my fever spiked so high each night that it was feared I would

not survive. But thanks to many praying friends and an all powerful, gracious God, I did survive.

My surgeon reluctantly agreed to my discharge after I promised I would see him at his office

two times each week until he was satifsfied that the infection was clearing (as I still had a low

grade fever when I left the hospital).

I was so weak that I doubted I would ever feel good again. But, fortunately as the doctor left

my room that day, he turned and said, "If you have any vitamins at home it would be a good idea

to take some.."

Just before entering the hospital, a friend had given me the book, "Let's Eat Right To Keep

Fit" by Adele Davis, and some might think that that was a coincidencek, but I believed it was a

God-directed remark So when I got home, I devoured the book from cover to cover and began to
take any vitamin I read about that I thought would aid my recovery. (I am still very grateful for the

friend that gave me that book as it had a profound influence on my life.)

It took a whole year for me to feel "normal" again, but with a great husband and four very

special children ranging in age from four to fourteen, I continued to study nutrition in order to

maintain my health and the health of my family. Adele Davis was a nutritionist who worked very

closely with doctors all over Los Angeles County to recommend foods, vitamins and other

supplements to help patients who had not responded to medications. Her book is full of examples

from real life about her experiences.

It was fascinating to me to read one story after another - and one was especially challenging.

She told about a missionary who was a Japanese prisoner of war during World War II,

for many months and had so little to eat that he looked like a walking skeleton when he was

released. He was sent to Adele Davis and told her he had determined to put nothing into his

mouth except health- building foods. He was over 80 years old when he was released, but was

able to regain his health and strength and even his beautiful singing voice to sing at his

grand-daughter's wedding!

Before that experience, I had always been on the lookout for recipes that would taste good,

be easy to prepare, please my family and be easy on the budget. Though I still consider myself to

be a gourmet cook, I have enjoyed learning to substitute healthy ingredients in my recipes, and I

read labels very carefully to avoid health damaging ingredients. As someone has said, "We often

let the four inches on our tongues (where the tastebuds are located) determine our entire diet.

With our over- processed and fast foods American diet, even though our life expectancy is

greater than most nations, many older people have chronic illnesses that don't allow them to enjoy

life.l And many believe that these things are normal results of aging. But these same people are

not willing to begin eating the fresh fruits and vegetables, protein and healthy fats that are required

for maximum health instead of the highly sweetened, nutrient lacking typical American pattern.

I plan to share many of the health tips I have discovered as well as some of the original recipes I

have developed for delicious and nutritious eating. I am not a doctor and do not intend to give

medical advice. If you have any pain or other unusual symptoms, I encourage you to see your

health professional.

Because we are more than just physical beings, I will also be sharing from time to time some of

the Scriptures which have given me purpose, peace and joy in living. Many recent studies have

shown that our inner feeligs and beliefs have a tremendous affect upon our health.

In the Bible, we read, "Why spend your money on food that does not give you

strength? Why
pay for food that does you no good?" Isaiah 55:2.
